When Overgrowth Outpaces Standard Equipment
In the subtropical climate of southeast Alabama, overgrowth doesn’t take long. One missed season can turn a usable pasture into briars, dogfennel, and tall grass that stands chest-high. When vegetation outpaces standard lawn equipment, you need a heavier solution. That solution is bush hogging.
Royal Lawns specializes in managing aggressive overgrowth with heavy-duty rotary mowing. We cut down thick grass and brush to restore access, safety, and control. Not every property needs a golf course finish. Sometimes the goal is simply containment and usability.
Whether you’re maintaining agricultural land, managing a vacant commercial lot, or keeping woods from creeping into your backyard, our team has the horsepower to get it done.
We serve landowners in Enterprise, Daleville, and New Brockton who value straight talk and hard work. We understand that it can be frustrating to find a contractor for more complex jobs. Calls go unanswered, and schedules get vague. That’s not how we operate.
As a veteran-owned business, we apply discipline to scheduling and communication. When you book us, we arrive on time, respect property boundaries, and work until the objective is met.
about us
The Royal Lawns Difference: Power and Precision
Bush hogging is often viewed as a rough service, but it shouldn’t be done carelessly. Operating heavy machinery on uneven terrain requires skill and awareness. Hidden hazards, such as stumps, rocks, and washouts, can damage equipment and pose safety risks. Terrain conditions also matter, including wet spots and how cuts are made to reduce clumping and windrows.
Our team approaches every project with a focus on safety and efficiency. We utilize professional-grade tractors and rotary cutters specifically designed for handling thick vegetation. We bring equipment that can handle saplings, brambles, and tall weeds without bogging down. That efficiency can also save you money by covering more ground in less time than under-equipped crews.

When to Call for Bush Hogging
Standard residential mowers are built for grass that’s already relatively short. Trying to push a zero-turn mower into three-foot field grass can burn out clutches, snap belts, or damage spindles.
Bush hogging bridges the gap between lawn care and land clearing. It’s the right choice when vegetation is too dense for finish mowers but not yet mature enough to require heavier clearing.
This service is especially useful for absentee landowners or anyone holding property for future development. Keeping land cut helps maintain value and supports compliance with local ordinances. City codes can include strict rules on vegetation height for vacant lots. A scheduled cut can help you avoid fines and ongoing headaches.

The Hidden Benefits of Field Mowing
Regular bush hogging offers practical benefits beyond aesthetics. One of the biggest is pest reduction. Tall grass provides cover for mice, rats, and snakes, including venomous species common to Alabama, such as copperheads and rattlesnakes. Keeping grass knocked down removes cover and can make the land safer for kids and pets.
Field mowing also supports fire safety. In late summer and early fall, tall grass dries out and becomes highly flammable. A spark from a passing vehicle or lightning can ignite a fire that spreads quickly toward structures. Maintaining shorter growth helps reduce fuel load and creates more defensible space.

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
What is bush hogging, and how is it different from regular mowing?
Bush hogging (also known as rotary cutting or brush hogging) is a specialized landscaping technique designed for effective vegetation control. The primary difference lies in the equipment and the objective. Regular lawn mowing utilizes sharp, high-speed blades to cut grass cleanly, resulting in a manicured, "carpet-like" finish. It is intended for grass that is maintained weekly.
Bush hogging, on the other hand, uses a heavy rotary cutter deck attached to a tractor or a high-powered skid steer. Instead of thin, sharp blades, a bush hog uses thick, heavy steel blades (often pivoting on a "stump jumper" pan) that use momentum to bludgeon and tear through vegetation. This design enables the machine to hit a small stump or rock without damaging the gearbox.
The objective of bush hogging is not a "pretty" cut; it is a "functional" cut. It is designed to take down material that would destroy a standard mower—thick stalks, weeds, briars, and saplings up to an inch or two in diameter. The finished product will look rougher than a lawn; the grass may be 4 to 6 inches tall, and the clippings will be larger. However, the land will be clear, accessible, and free of the dense overgrowth that previously covered it. It is the heavy artillery of the lawn care world.
What types of properties need this service?
Bush hogging is incredibly versatile and is used across a wide spectrum of property types. We frequently service residential properties where a homeowner has purchased a few extra acres that they don't want to maintain as a fine lawn, but don't want to turn into a forest. It’s also common for homeowners who have fallen behind on maintenance due to illness or broken equipment and need a "reset" so they can resume mowing with their own gear.
Commercial properties are another major user of this service. Vacant lots held for investment, future building sites, and buffer zones around warehouses all require periodic cutting to stay compliant with city ordinances. We also work heavily with agricultural landowners. Pastures need to be clipped to knock down weeds that livestock won't eat; if left standing, these weeds will go to seed and ruin the quality of the grazing land.
Finally, we serve recreational land. Hunting leases, ATV parks, and private trails all need bush hogging to keep lanes open. If you have land that is too rough, too tall, or too big for a push mower or a zero-turn, it is a candidate for bush hogging.
How thick of material can you cut?
The cutting capacity of a bush hog is impressive, but it does have limits. Our equipment is designed to handle what we call "heavy brush and light woody material." This means we can easily mow through tall field grass (regardless of height), thick patches of goldenrod and ragweed, blackberry briars, and kudzu.
Regarding woody material (trees), we can generally cut saplings that are up to 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. If you can bend it over with your foot, the bush hog can usually shred it. This makes it perfect for clearing fields that are just starting to be overtaken by young pines, sweetgums, or privet.
However, bush hogging is not the same as forestry mulching or land clearing. If you have established trees with trunks the size of a baseball bat or larger (3+ inches), a bush hog is not the right tool. Hitting trees of that size can damage the tractor and create dangerous flying debris. For those heavier jobs, we would recommend our Forestry Mulching service, which uses a grinding drum to remove larger trees. When you contact us, we’ll ask about the size of the vegetation to ensure we bring the right machine for the job.
Do you haul away debris after mowing?
No, debris removal is generally not part of the standard bush hogging service, and here is why: The nature of bush hogging is to manage large areas of land efficiently. The machine cuts the vegetation and discharges it out the back or side of the deck, leaving it on the ground.
Because we are often dealing with acres of land, raking and bagging the clippings would be prohibitively expensive and labor-intensive. Instead, we rely on the "mulching" effect. The cut vegetation is left on the field to decompose. In the Alabama heat and humidity, this breakdown happens relatively quickly. This process is actually beneficial for the land; as the cut grass and weeds rot, they return nitrogen and organic matter to the soil, essentially acting as a natural fertilizer for the next growth cycle.
If the grass is extremely tall (4+ feet), there may be visible "windrows" or clumps of dried hay left behind immediately after the cut. These will settle and disappear over a few weeks. If a cleaner look is absolutely required, we can discuss options for double-cutting (mowing the area twice in perpendicular directions) to chop the material into smaller, less visible pieces.
Can I get a quote for large acreage?
Absolutely. We have the capability to scale our services to match the size of your project. Whether you have a modest 2-acre lot behind your house or a 50-acre commercial tract, we can provide a competitive, transparent quote.
Pricing for large acreage is typically calculated differently from low residential flat rates. For larger jobs, we often look at the density of the growth and the topography of the land. A flat, open 10-acre field that just has tall grass is faster and cheaper to cut than a 10-acre plot that is hilly, wet, and full of hidden stumps and saplings.
When you contact us for a quote for a large acreage, we typically use satellite imagery to measure the total square footage and inspect the terrain remotely. If necessary, we will conduct an on-site consultation to assess the land and identify any potential hazards. This allows us to provide you with a firm price, ensuring there are no surprises on the invoice. We also offer volume discounts for recurring maintenance contracts on large properties.
